Art Show

I picked B's paper out of the class without any clues!  :)

We were impressed with Ak's self portrait drawing . . . . some of her classmate's looked like they struggled.

Her teacher drew her profile.  Fun to see all those on the wall displayed.

Z had to draw his favorite foods:  he drew a carrot, raisins, apple, ice cream, prunes, crunch bar, tootsie roll, and fish.  I think Z's is the only student ever to have the Hungry Caterpillar going through prunes!?!  :)

He did this in math class:  symmetrical design.

D got done with Tennis early and surprised us by showing up at the school!  They were all proud to show us their artwork!    Good job guys!

Bats!

My sister made some bat wings for her family for Halloween and sent them back with my parents who went to visit her.   We get to borrow them for a season!  The kids liked flying around right away!  :)   Watch out for bats if you come to our house.  Thanks Aunt Em!

First Ski Trip!!!

We've been saving money in our ski fund this past year and talking about how we the parents LOVE to ski - I was hoping that the kids wouldn't be disappointed or not like it!  I wanted them to not get too cold or give up after falling.   I was so worried about when and where that I finally prayed and said, "I'm going to finally pick a day and a place and I'm turning it over to you to help with the weather and the little things I can't control."   I'm happy to report it was a success!!!

We thought about teaching them ourselves but thought it would be good if they had even an hour lesson but Ak was too young for some of them - so we enrolled them all in "Snow Monsters"  which was a 3 hour kids program - it turned out to be a great choice! (and not much more $)   We dropped them off at 930 am and they helped them get all their equipment and explained all the first time know how stuff - like getting your boot hooked to your ski!   They split them into groups and took them out for an hour.  Z and B got to go on an easy slope that had a chair lift - so they learned how to do that by themselves.   Ak was in their discovery zone - a little easier spot where she learned to step on a magic carpet.

This time allowed us to see them but to go off on our own too!  This was my first time skiing in 10 years!   It was great weather and although it was a little icy in the morning since this snow is mostly packed manmade stuff - we had a good time!   On one run D noticed we were by ourselves.   He stopped and was watching me ski down the mountain and he smiled when he caught my eye . . . then right after I smiled back - he fell over.   BAM!  It was so funny!    Like those romantic moments in movies where something sweet is going on and then suddenly the music changes or stops abruptly as something happens.     My parents came with us and my mom stuck to the green slopes - so after a few runs there we took my dad on some blue ones.  (that's me and him on the chair lift)

The kids got a break in the middle at 11 am - went inside for a snack then went back out to ski for another hour.  When we picked them up at 12:30 pm - B wanted to go right back to skiing!!!  But we told her we were going to stop for lunch - she reluctantly agreed.   I was just glad they all wanted to go back out on the slope!    The weather warmed up a bit and the sun melted the snow/ice a little on the top so it made it seem more real.  :)   We had to take our hats off it warmed up!   Ak came down the whole green slope  - but she did not like it so we took her back to where B and Z had their lessons and that's where she stayed. (either with me or Grandma who after a fall decided Akil's slope was just fine for the rest of the afternoon!)    I think everyone should have an opportunity to ride a chairlift with Ak - she was so positive gushing how awesome it was and how this was the best first ski trip ever!  :)    She said it over and over.    B and Z went with D and had some adventures . . . . Z did a cartwheel fall  among other ones. .. . B fell off the chairlift right after she sat on it and it started to go forward and up . . . and since they lack slow down or turning skills - she plowed into some girl full speed - sorry!   but they never said they wanted to quit!   I took Z inside at one point  for "some water" - luckily he communicated that it was hurting around his ankle and I was able to pull out his pj pants that had bunched up.  You don't want stuff rubbing against your skin . . . see below - that is what happened to D.  He noticed at lunch there was a small metal thing at the bottom of his pants that his boot was pushing against his skin.  He moved it and it felt better after lunch - but the damage had been done and that night - Ouch looking blister!!!

We lasted on the slopes till 5 pm!  It was a  fun day!!!   We stopped on the way home at Culvers and it ended a great day!   We were almost home and I learned that during Z's class he had fallen while getting off the chair lift and slide down that part where you are supposed to "keep your skiis" up?!?!?!?   No wonder why that instructor came over to explain it to us before we heard it from him . . . I didn't' understand that he slide down that side - I'm just glad it wasn't a steep drop off!!!

So many memories of learning to ski in Germany came back to me!  Especially when the lodge started to make lunch.  Being out in cold weather with food smells reminds me of all the times I was out at markets as a kid or outside for hours as a missionary.    I feel so blessed to have lived there and to have had so many wonderful opportunities to see and do things there in that great culture!   Thanks mom and dad for our adventures while we lived there!!!!   I can't image my personality without those memories!  Blessed, I feel blessed.  For my past and  that we were able to have this great day as a family!
So we'll be starting a new ski fund!!!  :)

Picking Up Sticks

We asked the kids to help pick up sticks in the front and back yard and put them out by the street . . . this the idea they came with on their own!   :)    Whatever works!!!  :)

Babysitters!

Usually every year for the Stake Valentine's Dance my in laws come watch our children so we can attend!  The kids love it!   AJ helped build a fire per Mammaw's request.
Mammaw brought stuff to make some red velvet brownies . . . it's fun to be a helper!
We asked our kids to take a picture of us ready to go . . . I expected more of a full length shot - but they love to use the zoom lens.
The dance had a few more slow songs than we prefer . . . but we still had a good time!
I don't want to complain since I don't want them to ask me to be in charge!  :)  But even though it's a Valentine's Dance - -- there doesn't need to me more slow songs than fast! . . . those who hate to dance stayed home - - - so put on some fast good music!!!  :)

Happy Valentine's Day!!!

D surprised me with flowers and a box of cinnamon rolls this morning before school!  He didn't get them at Aldi's because they were out he said so I had to bite my lip a few times to keep myself from saying that he probably spent too much money on them then! (although I was glad he at least tried to go to Aldi's first!  He said he didn't want to wait till after work to give them to me.)   It was a very sweet thought and they smell great and will make a nice centerpiece for a luncheon that I'm hosting tomorrow!

I taught a Zumba class wearing a red t-shirt and black capris with red/white/silver stripped knee high socks!  Later I got to go see Ak play outside with her class after their Valentine's party.

Since dance class at the church was postponed today - we had a few minutes after I picked them up to play outside on the school playground!  :)
"In family life, love is the oil that eases friction, the cement that binds closer together, and the music that brings harmony."   --- Eva Burrows
For dinner we picked up some food and shakes and took them home and watched a movie all together.
Hope you all had a great Valentine's Day too!!!

Piano

All 3 of my children are now taking piano lessons!  B and Z started when they were 7 years old and have done very well!  Their teacher says she can tell they have a gene for music!   Ak has been asking for lessons for awhile and loved it when we had time for home lessons.    Ak got to officially start with lessons in January even though she's only 6!  She is so excited and she loves to practice and go to lessons.    Last year, she picked a few songs out by ear on her own. . . .  parts of a couple of Primary songs and Jolly Old St. Nicholas.  It impressed me then - but a few weeks ago I heard picking out part of a song that B has been playing.   Ak would sit at the piano and try and try again to find the notes that sounded right . . . finally she had the whole first line.  I was QUITE impressed.

click here to see B playing the whole song called "Caravan" - it was the last song she had to master before moving into her 3rd piano book!!!

click here to see Ak playing   just the first line but still ....  two hands together, with a flat, and a sharp!!!   If you ask her to play it now - she has an "ending" that she has added so it doesn't just stop.   Maybe I shouldn't be so impressed - but I laugh at remembering her sitting there plunking away with wrong notes and then hearing her get the right notes!   I told her piano teacher and she said maybe she's not qualified to teach her.  But all 3 of my kids love this woman!

click here to hear Ak's tag (the ending)
she said B has an ending to her song - so she needed one too.  :)  She decided that all on her own.

Romeo & Juliet

We went to Kalie's school to see her in a play put on by her Drama Class.  The cast was all girls.  I was worried about taking my kids since it's romance and people die at the end.   But it's a classic and I wanted them to see their cousin so I tried to explain the play so they wouldn't be surprised and maybe understand what was going on.   After I explained, B was intrigued and said, "I didn't know they made stories that didn't have happy endings."  Welcome to tragedies I said.

They lasted the whole play!  They had front row seats!   The cast members acted it all out on the above "stage" and they moved minimal props around themselves and the kids got to see it all - so it kept their attention.   Ak wanted to know "how many people are doing to die in this play?"  After Kalie was in a dual and died.   :)     On the way home, Z told me it wasn't as sad as I made it sound.   I think that's a good thing!
Kalie did a great job as Juliet's cousin, Tybalt.   Thanks for inviting us!

Basketball Begins!

Z asked to play basketball again this year!  They had to miss the previous week's game due to an ice storm - so Z was happy to get to play his first game of the season tonight!

"Snow" Day

We got a little bit of snow and school was cancelled so the kids wanted to go out and play!  :)  It was cold but they had a fun time!

There were excited when D went out and joined them!!!

Then they all came inside and drank hot chocolate!!!  :)
